omg, i have a blog
I know, it's so cliche. I'm doing something cool, and I'll be gone for awhile, so I made this blog on the assumption that you will miss me and want to be jealous of all of the cool stuff I'm doing.
Around the time of graduation, I said about a million times that I was going to start a blog. I thought I'd be bored in Maine, and Jose once told me that having a blog would be a good way to process all of those omg-i-graduated-from-college-and-am-doing-nothing-with-my-life thoughts. Well, here I am, almost exactly five months post-Rice, writing my first blog entry.
A few notes on the particulars...
1) The URL: I was always of the opinion that everyone at Rice should be called by their netID (until, of course, Rice stopped letting you choose your own netID and started calling it a netID). Since Paul and I are "sharing" this blog (don't worry, there will be no joint posts -- we'd kill each other arguing over semantics), I thought it'd be fun to use both of our netIDs as the url. A reminder of the good ol' days. Also, I never asked Paul for his opinion on this... deal with it, dude. Tim suggested we call it Spitzham or Hamfaden, or some equally awfully mixture of our two last names. The thought was nice, Tim, but I just wasn't feeling it.
2) The Title: A few months ago, I came across an op-ed in the New York Times called 'The Odyssey Years.' In it, the author describes the period of time in one's life between adolescence and adulthood as "the odyssey years," a "decade of wandering" when "young people go to school and take breaks from school. They live with friends and they live at home. They fall in and out of love. They try one career and then try another." Since I'm currently homeless and leading a vagabond life, it seems clear that I'm having my own odyssey.
For the record, Paul wanted to call the blog Europe Through the Baker Door. It would have been a tribute to Rick Steves (of Europe Through the Back Door fame) and our beloved Baker College. Good suggestion, Paul, but I overruled it. (I also haven't told him about this title.)
3) The Trip: We're leaving on Wednesday (October 15th) for Europe! We'll be in London first and hopefully, we'll update the blog if we have any down-time. But like I said, no joint-blogging. But we'll both post to the blog, so you can have both perspectives.
I hope our blog doesn't get too boring... leave some hate-comments if it does.
